Finding Those Who Have the Right Stuff

Hello, and welcome to American Dissident Voices. I'm Erich Gliebe.

This Monday, September 11th, marks what would have been Dr. William Pierce's 73rd birthday. Although he is no longer with us, his great work lives on through not only his writings and archived speeches, but also through the continued activity of the National Alliance.

I had the great fortune of working with Dr. Pierce on an almost-daily basis for about twelve years. One of my favorite things to do was pick his brain. I was absolutely amazed at his analytical mind, and I asked him questions every chance I got.

Dr. Pierce was a powerful figure and, for a while, wrote nearly every single piece of Alliance literature: every National Vanguard magazine article, every National Alliance Bulletin, and every American Dissident Voices radio broadcast. Despite his overwhelming input into everything that the Alliance did, he did not want -- in any way -- for the Alliance to be a one-man organization. He very much regretted the fact that, during most of his tenure as Chairman, he seemed to be able to motivate only a small fraction of the membership to step forward to actively help the Cause of the Alliance.

As Dr. Pierce admitted during one of his speeches to a group of Alliance members and supporters in the mid-1990s, he had always fought his tendency to micromanage things; that is, his tendency to do things himself, and his relative inability to relinquish responsibility to others. Not that he couldn't allow others to do some things; he often just waited to turn over responsibility until a person had proven himself competent over and over again. Many times, a promising Alliance member would get tired of waiting and quit the organization before Dr. Pierce was completely confident in that member's dedication and abilities.

The point here is not to run down Dr. Pierce, but only to mention that, like all of us, he had his own unique strengths and weaknesses. His veritable mountain of strengths on the one hand were countered by his relatively weaker people skills and his reluctance to entrust Alliance programs to "just anyone."

For those who would criticize Dr. Pierce on these grounds, we must recall that the Alliance is a worldwide organization and that Dr. Pierce had only limited contact with individual members. Certainly, he didn't work on a daily basis with the men and women who may have had the desire and initiative to take over some Alliance functions in their local areas. Can anyone blame him for being cautious? After all, Dr. Pierce believed -- as we do today -- that the Alliance holds the key to the future of our race, and so there was good reason to be careful. Perhaps he was too careful, but at any rate, we can look back now and come up with a pretty clear picture as to why Dr. Pierce was the way he was.

From his boyhood on, Dr. Pierce was a go-getter, one who did things himself because firstly, he wanted them done NOW, and secondly, he had certain standards that had to be upheld, and he learned quickly that most others didn't share his tendency of perfectionism. One doesn't earn a PhD in physics either by letting others do the job for him or by being satisfied with second-rate work. When he set out on his own and founded the National Alliance, those ingrained characteristics stayed with him until the end. On his final day of work, Dr. Pierce worked well past midnight despite being in excruciating pain before checking himself into the hospital. He was suffering from the most aggressive form of cancer and was literally being eaten alive.

After Dr. Pierce's unfortunate passing in July of 2002, a very small handful of National Alliance members dropped out of the organization because Dr. Pierce was no longer around. These were not the types of members that Dr. Pierce or the Alliance needed. Dr. Pierce did not want the Alliance to be a cult, in which every member just sat back and waited for the leader or guru to perform his magic. Despite all obstacles, Dr. Pierce strived to build a strong, viable organization, one that could lose a key member and replace that person overnight without missing a beat.

As I mentioned earlier, Dr. Pierce had a doctoral degree in physics, and he was a university professor before founding the National Alliance. Because of his background, when I first met him, I had initially expected him to be more interested in recruiting members to the Alliance who had college degrees or who were white-collar professionals, but I was wrong. He wasn't interested in on-paper credentials. He was interested in dedication and desire, and he realized that some of the best go-getters were the ones without any educational accolades. Here in America, most of our ancestors -- the ones who carved farms and cities out of a wilderness -- were short on education, but long on will and determination. Some of you may remember stories about the bravery and ingenuity of your parents or grandparents or great-grandparents who maybe had an 8th-grade education or even less.

Shortly after Dr. Pierce was diagnosed with having less than a month to live, I sat with him in the hospital and we began to go through the Alliance's membership list one name at a time. And although we had a number of members with "Doctor" titles and other impressive credentials, what Dr. Pierce really sought in his members was good character. It didn't matter whether a person had a PhD or if he was a manual laborer; Dr. Pierce looked for the member who did the right thing, even when no one was looking, even when there wasn't someone nearby waiting to stand up and applaud when the member had done a bit of good work for the Cause. The members Dr. Pierce valued were the ones who did more than what was expected of them without complaining and without fanfare.

Of course, we try to remember to tell a member that he's done a good job when we can, but we've got too many things going on to hand out compliments every time a member does something for the good of the Cause. Fortunately, our growing Local Units have mostly taken on the job of morale-booster among the general membership. Besides a member deriving satisfaction on his own from helping his race, we now have a strong support system through the local networking among members that has become possible as our numbers have grown in recent years. Well, anyway, Dr. Pierce was concerned about finding Whites of courage and character -- no matter what kind of education they had -- who would be able to work as a team to lead our race out of the darkness and into the light of a hopeful future.

On the final day Dr. Pierce was able to speak, on July 21, 2002, he told me that the biggest concern he had for our race was the lack of self-discipline in our people and, in regards to the Alliance, he stressed that we are not interested in building what he called "the biggest gang." He was more interested in the quality of the membership rather than in the quantity.

He understood that everything worthwhile was the product of a small number of people who saw the potential in a device or idea and were able to bring that device or idea to the larger masses. The masses were either unable to see the value of, for example, an idea or they were too lazy to suffer the hardships required to achieve the idea's future benefits. Most people are unable or unwilling to sacrifice what is known today for something that requires work and time to secure, even if the projected benefits far surpass the conditions of today.

We racialists see this lack of foresight all the time. No White with any sense of racial loyalty honestly believes that the White homeland that we in the National Alliance are pushing for will be worse than the multiracial chaos and hell-hole we now live in. Quite to the contrary. Every White with even a twinge of racial allegiance that I've ever talked to -- and that includes most Whites who are not a part of our Cause -- is quite sure that our monoracial White homeland will be much better in every way than our society today.

The problem is that, so far, only a small number of Whites have answered the call to bring that new world into being. We are that minority, and our job is to show the White masses the beauty of our vision and to lead them. Eventually, they will follow us of their own volition but, even then, they will need constant guidance as to where to go. That is what Dr. Pierce was talking about when he stressed that the National Alliance was not out to secure "the biggest gang." He emphasized our need to recruit a minority of truly dedicated Whites, and he was right on the money. So the people we need to recruit are those who have the capability of being the spark plugs that will motivate White people the world over and show them the way to a secure and progressive future.

I would go so far as to label these present and future White activists "calm fanatics." They are fanatical in their dedication to the Cause of White self-determination, but they are calm and controlled in going about their racialist activities. They go about their work diligently, knowing that they are doing the right thing, and they generally are in a good humor despite the appalling racial situation. They are NOT the wild-eyed automatons that stereotypically come to mind at the word "fanatic." They don't use racial epithets, and although they admit that the Jews are certainly no help in mitigating our race's plight, they hold that most of the blame must be placed on ourselves for our race's bleak position in the world today. It may surprise you that most of the "calm fanatics" of White racialism have thrown out the tired "superior/inferior" arguments about racial differences and have settled on the irrefutable conclusion that our race is unique, as are the others. The "calm fanatics" have simply decided that our race is worth saving, and they are working overtime to do just that.

But our Cause is far from accomplishing even its most immediate, concrete goal: the securing of a homeland for White people. Because of that, we need more and more "calm fanatics" to do the countless tasks of organizing, promoting, and inspiring that are needed to broaden our influence.

The most prominent personality trait that we are looking for in the White racial activists that we in the National Alliance hope to weld into an iron core with the strength to save our race is... a determination to succeed. We need people who will give their very best to the task at hand, and if that fails, then they will try it again in another way. We need people with a bulldog mentality, people who don't quit even if they get smacked around a bit. Unfortunately, a lot of White people who have many other fine qualities lack this most critical one, and when they fail a few times or run into a brick wall, they lose heart and quit. The good news is that a bulldog mentality is largely a matter of choice, and any White person of good will can develop it in himself if he truly desires it.

Besides dedication and a never-say-die attitude, a White activist should make the most of the opportunities around him. Young Whites should prepare themselves for a future of White activism by learning as much as they can: in school, on the job, and anywhere else. Not that education gives anyone more determination or will, but -- all other things being equal -- an activist who is articulate, who can express himself with the written and spoken word, and who has a general grasp of history and our cultural traditions usually makes for a better spokesman to those we are trying to recruit.

And besides education for its own sake, our Cause has a need of people with countless specific talents. We need people in the field of law to help us wage the battles in the courts. We need people in police work, even in the FBI. We need racially conscious Whites in key positions in the business and media worlds, in the schools and in hospitals. Recall that the White homeland we envision will need a law enforcement system, an educational system, a health care system, an economic system, and a system of government. In many respects, it will mirror our society of today, but it will be a society that has as a backdrop the survival and progress of our race. And that will make it a society worth preserving.

But for now, we have before us the job of awakening the creative minority among our racial kinsmen and motivating them to spearhead our Cause's drive toward White living space. That's the purpose William Pierce had more than 30 years ago when he formed the National Alliance. We've come a long way in that time, and we've continued to grow after our founder's passing.

This growth of our Cause MUST continue, because if it doesn't, every White person who has ever lived will have lived for nothing. Just think how high we'll be able to climb up our evolutionary path in just the first hundred years after we've secured our own homeland. No non-White immigration problem. No chaos in the schools. The drug problem and the crime problem will disappear almost overnight.

But, best of all...no non-Whites on our turf. No race-mixing. No Jewish filth on television or in the movies. No young Whites worshipping non-White music stars or non-White athletes. It will be OUR world, a world based on OUR values and OUR traditions and OUR standards of excellence. It will be a world of honesty, hard work, and generosity. The feeling of community will be electric. It's something to look forward to.

But we can't do it without you. We're not asking for your HELP. We don't want you to HELP; we want you to DO. That's all that William Pierce wanted as well: to DO. Not to be content to sit back and watch things happen, but to lower your shoulder and make things happen. Not to HELP...to DO.

Search your heart and make the right decision to become one of those "calm fanatics," to become one of the strong Whites who are fighting for a better future.
