The Death of Free Speech Ernst Zundel is a 44-year-old German citizen living in Canada. He normally makes his living as as publisher. For the past few months, however, things have been far from normal for Zundel; he has had to concern himself more with avoiding being assassinated than with operating his Toronto publishing business. He is also concerned about staying out of prison.
To that latter end he has had to make frequent trips to Toronto's courthouse, each time fighting his way through a howling mob waiting to hurl bricks at him, spit on him, and slash him with can openers, if they can get close enough.
His attorney, Lauren Marshall, is exposed to the same dangers Zundel is. During a recent court appearance she told Provincial Court Judge William Ross in a trembling voice that she and her client and both their families are harassed daily and have received numerous death threats. Hate-callers telephone incessantly, she said. When her seven-year-old daughter answered the telephone once, the caller threatened: "If your mommy goes to court, she'll be killed." Chanting demonstrators, unhampered by the police, keep up an around-the-clock racket outside Zundel's and Marshall's homes in order to keep them from sleeping. Judge Ross listened impassively to Marshall's complaints, but he made no response.
What awful crime is Zundel charged with? Is he a child molester? A kidnapper? A mass murderer? The leader of a drug ring? No, for if he were any of these, things the police and Judge Ross would be falling over themselves to make sure that no one violated his civil rights. Incredible as it may seem, the "offense" for which Zundel is to be tried in June is "spreading false information about the Holocaust." In Canada, to make a public statement about the "Holocaust" the supposed extermination of six million Jews in "gas ovens" by the Germans during the Second World War -- which is contrary to the officially approved history of that subject can land a person in a penitentiary for two years.
That's because Canada's Jews and her Christian clergymen and her politicians all got together and passed an "anti-hate" law. They convinced the public that "hate" needed to be outlawed, else the "haters" would be free to spread their lies about racial and religious minorities and infect innocent, young minds. So now "hate" is illegal in Canada.
And Zundel is a "hater," because he has published books and pamphlets which state that Jewish "Holocaust" claims are exaggerated. Fewer than six million Jews were killed by the Germans during the Second World War, he says. Furthermore, many specific claims about the "gassing" of Jews can be shown to be false.
The casual observer still may wonder why Zundel's statements have aroused Canada's Jews to such a frenzy and have caused the government to bring "hate" charges against him. After all, if Zundel can provide evidence that the Germans killed only five million -- or two million or half a million -- Jews instead of six million, why not look at that evidence? What can be hurt by a free debate on the subject? Why are the Jews so hysterically determined to silence anyone who questions their version of what happened?
The answer is easy. If a free debate is permitted, and if Zundel can cast substantial doubt on even one tiny aspect of the official "Holocaust" story, then the whole thing may come unraveled. People will ask, "If the Jews lied about one aspect of the 'Holocaust,' then what about the other aspects?" And the Jews know exactly where that will lead.
It will lead, for one thing, to the end of Israel's free ride. It will lead to the average Canadian or American or German no longer being ashamed to say "no" when asked for more taxes to subsidize Israel's conquests in the Middle East. It will lead to the end of the Jews' privileged status everywhere as "untouchables"; no longer will their actions and motives be above reproach.
No longer will the Jews be a people to whom the world owes a living, because they have suffered so much more than anyone else. No longer will Gentile judges and policemen regard behavior of the sort the Jews have displayed outside the Toronto courthouse and the homes of Zundel and his attorney as excusable. No longer will the Jews be able to silence any critic by waving the "Holocaust" in his face. That is why the Jews are so desperate for a Zundel conviction -- and why they are pressing U.S. legislators to pass an "anti-hate" law similar to Canada's.
That also is why the outcome of Ernst Zundel's June trial is of the utmost importance -- not only to the Jews, but to the peoples everywhere on whom they have imposed for so long.
